Special Chapter 4 The happiness a child
Ling Long happily threw the small sandbag in the sky and kicked flexibly. The left foot changed for the right foot; the right foot changed for the left foot. She was very skillful.
βHeeheeβ¦Look at me kicking the sandbag. Come over, you canβt, right?!β She was only five or six-year-old and looked sideways that the little boy beside her who was of the same age and said proudly.
The little boy didnβt even look up and continued to tease his crickets.
Ling Long pouted. She grabbed the falling sandbag and threw it at him. She shouted, βYou said that if I catch crickets with you, you will kick the sandbag with me.β
The sandbag happened to land in the wooden tube containing the crickets. The little boy screamed, βAh, my crickets!β
While he spoke, he threw away the sandbag and picked up the wooden tube as if it was a treasure. He glared angrily at Ling Long, βDidnβt I already see you kick it in the morning? I donβt play the things that girls play with!β
βHow can that be considered watching? And it was not kicking with me!β Ling Long was angry.
The little boy laughed and said, βYou caught crickets with me, but you didnβt really catch one!β
Ling Longβs face flushed with rage, βWe agreed that whoever refused to acknowledge our promise is a turtle and bastard!β
When the little boy saw that his crickets were still alive in the wooden tube, he let out a sigh of relief and made a funny face at Ling Long, βI just wonβt play with you! I just wonβt play with you!β
While he spoke, he ran away holding the wooden tube while he laughed.
Ling Long didnβt hesitate to chase, βTurtle, turtle, big turtle! A turtle that a sandbag wonβt even kick!β
The little boy ran even faster while he laughed.
While Ling Long ran, she continued to shout, βTurtle, big turtle, useless big turtle!β
Unexpectedly, she ran too fast and in a moment of carelessness, Ling Long fell on the ground. It was so painful that her nose became sore and tears almost fell.
Suddenly, a touch of black appeared in front of her. The summer heat was nowhere to be seen. That touch of black came closer. The coolness became stronger and stronger. Her arm was gently pulled and she stood up. The pain on her knees miraculously disappeared.
βWhat did you say just now?β
A voice that was as deep as the night. Ling Long was slightly stunned. She looked up and saw that it was actually a beautiful big brother.
βWhat, whatβ¦did I just say?β Ling Longβs head was dizzy. Did she say something just now that offended this big brother?
His face looked very cold and his eyes seemed to be made out of winter ice.
βMm, what did say just now?β He asked once again. His tone softened a bit.
Ling Long scratched her head and sneaked a glance at the beautiful big brother. She whispered, βI saidβ¦turtle, turtle, big turtleβ¦useless big turtleβ¦β
Ling Longβs voice gradually got lower. She knew that it was wrong to scold people, but who let that person made her so angry?!
βCanβ¦you say it once more?β
The beautiful big brother lowered his body and looked up at her.
Ling Long was a bit timid, but that pair of eyes looking at her made her unable to refuse. She said timidly, βTurtle, turtle, big turtle, useless big turtleβ¦β
There was a cool breeze in the evening of the summer bringing the fragrance of the summer flowers, the tenderness of the summer grass, and the rustiness of the summer leaves.
Ling Long stared at the beautiful big brother in front of her. She suddenly wasnβt so scared anymore. She timidly took two steps forward. The small hand that still had mud on it reached to his eyes. While she wiped, she said, βBig brother, your eyesβ¦are raining.β
The End
TLnote: thank you all for reading. I had fun translating this book, although it is a tragedy. What I learned from this book is that communication is key in any relationship, be it friends, family or lovers. NZ and LX suffered so much because of lack of communication. If one of them had talked about their inner feelings, this tragedy wouldn’t have happened. Another thing that I noticed is that people I didn’t expect to recognize LX were able to identify her first than those who love her the most. Perhaps, love truly blinds someone and the third party is always the one who sees the clearest.

It’s a tragedy but at least at the very last chapter, it sparked a little hope. Thanks for translating!
What to you think the title Living up to you means? I interpret it as LX who tries hundreds of years to live for NZ selflessly protecting him without him knowing.
That is a good interpretation. The chinese title is δΈθ΄θι’ which literally mean Living up to desolate Yan which I interpreted as everyone failed to live up to her. Her brother, FS, NZ, her master and even herself had failed herself. She had never once truly lived for herself
What’s Yan? Your interpretation on the base of the complete title is certainly more correct. It’s a very sad novel. I wish the author had left more clues during the novel because It was Impossible to guess the ending and the real identity of LX. I also wish we could have some chapter from NZ’s point of view.
Many chapters ago I wrote a comment about how LX couldn’t catch a break from suffering; in light of how the novel then leaped from a tragedy to another, I couldn’t be more correct
Yan is from Jing Yan. Yes, this whole book seemed like a torture for LX. Perhaps, this was the wrath of heaven because she acted according to her own will instead of her owners
You know, that view is indoubtedly quite possible. I don’t usually read tragedies because I prefer stories with a painful journey but with a happy ending. This is not the case, but I recognise that the most memorable novels are those with bitter or tragic ending.
Agree. One of the reasons why I have a love-hate relationship with tragedies
Oh shocks. Reading your comments, I am now not sure whether Ling Long is Ling Xi. Tsk. Now I’m bothered. Making it unclear gives is a bit more of an impact on us readers. But I really hope it’s Ling Xi
I was initially reluctant to read this novel but I’m so glad I did. One of my favorite novels. Thank you!!!
Hey Miss Dreamer. I’ll be re-reading this novel from the start. Maybe I’ll understand it more by then. I hope you’ll still be here to answer my questions
I will be here and try to answer your questions π
Thank you for the translations! Really enjoyed being able to read them, along with your explanations of what was happening in the story (since so much was left ambiguous).
Okay… Ling Long is definitely Ling Xin. Just like how Chen Xi became Xi Chen in the previous chapter, maybe this is another play in the name act. It’s just that the Xi was removed rom king Xin to represent how she has already detached herswlf from Chen Xi. P free viousky LX and CX shared the character ‘xi’. It’s changed to represent how she has became her own person.
I love this and thank you so so so much for translating!!Β°3Β° I literally cried so hard when QK gave up his cultivation and died for LX ποΈβποΈ

Thank you so much for translating this awesome story. I love it. Your hard work and commitment are very appreciated.
Thank you for translating this awesome novel. I love it and can’t have enough of it
I had the exact same thoughts. The one who recognized her was Qing lian and the bone eating demons and yet then ones who lived with her and interacted with her the most seems to be so focused on their own misery, they could even tell it was her. Just so wild
Many thanks
