In the past few days, I thought to pick up The emperor’s wife again, so I tried to read it to get the feelings back. While reading it, I was so embarrassed. Too many mistakes and some plot seemed too forced. So I decided to take it down.

I must admit, I was or maybe am too inexperienced to write about the chinese harem. My plot was childish. Besides when I started I wanted to write it from the female lead’s perspective, but then I couldn’t fill the chapters with as many words as I would’ve wanted. That’s why I also started to wrote chapters in the male’s perspective. A messy thing to do. From so many chapters, the only chapter I am pretty satisfied with is the chapter when they got to know each other’s identity. The other chapters were kind of rubbish.

After reading/listening/translating chinese books, I got more insight and more ‘experience’ in the chinese harem. So I will take it down and rewrite it with hopefully better plot.

  1. Do you have any novel recommendations for beginners? I’m taking Chinese 3 in my High school. I want to get better to the point where I could read and try translating novels. I really like romance novels. Thanks!

    1. From the books i know, 7 liferimes is the most simple one. You can try read it in chinese and if you don’t understand then check it with the translations.
If you are more advanced, you can try 重生之将门毒后/ Rebirthed poisonous empress of a general’s family. Its a book about an empress who got rebirthed and takes revenge for her pastlife while protecting her family. I really like this book because it’s realistic. The female lead doesn’t have super powers or super ability to learn . She is fighting within her own means. Her only advantage is she knows what will happen in the future.
Since you say you are in chinese 3, although I don’t know which level that is but assuming you already went through two years of chinese you can try 簪中录/ The recordings of the hairpin . It’s very well written, but the chinese is on the difficult level. Its about a girl who is accused of murdering her whole family. She went on a journey to prove her innocence.
A few days ago I wrote a review about jin yun zhe, mo shang shuang and care becoming happiness. The first one is difficult to read. The second one will be good for a beginner. You can try translating the second one. Its a short book. Its a hundred and something chapter which is short considering the other chinese books are 200+ chapters.

You can also try modern books. I don’t have advice for that cause I only read the english translation of modern books.

      1. Chinese 3 is past beginners level. I guess low intermediate? It’s because I come across some novels with really intriguing synposises but I’m not skilled to the point of being able to translate yet.

        1. Do you speak chinese? If you speak it you can try use google translate and read the pinyin. Most of the time if I dont know the words, i’ll do that.
If you are low intermediate rebirthed emoress fron tej genral familg is a good one it also has a nearly completed audiobook

  2. Re-writing or self editing is always good. I participate in NaNoWriMo – (National Novel Writing Month) and I recently went back to review a piece i wrote with the idea of taking it to a writers group – and found I had never finished it! I knew the ending and everything but somehow, that part never got written down. So, take your time and wrap your story up the way you want it.

  3. Hmm… I just read this notice… never thought that it’s an original novel… I even thought that it’s from an author… I was searching high and low in internet for the next chapter… thanks for picking it up again…
