Chapter 74 Don’t want you to follow (1)

What Lin Qing had guessed was not wrong. The affair of the Xiongnu wasn’t that simple. More than ten days later, the spies sent him another report that made his brows furrow deeply.

The civil and military officials at court had been summoned once again by emperor Jinghui to discuss the issue of the Xiongnu. However, emperor Jinghui looked flustered this time. All of this deeply betrayed his inner anxiety.

Situ Yaohua was also shocked after he read the report sent back by the spies. The Xiongnu still lingered around in the cities they had seized control off. Why was that?

Situ Yaohua had a very bad guess in his heart, but he didn’t dare to be sure of it. After the officials of the court read the report, they also had the same conjecture in their hearts, but no one dared to say it out loud.

None of the important civil and military officials of this dynasty dared to speak out and no one dared to bring in ideas. The gathering of this time ended with silence and nothing definite.

Not long after, Zhao Zimu rubbed Lin Qing’s temples and asked a bit worried, “What is the matter?”

The moment Lin Qing had returned to the residence, he had a worried look which surprised Zhao Zimu. What matter could let this person reveal such a worried expression? Zhao Zimu had never seen it before. Even when he was being hunted down in the previous life, he didn’t reveal such an expression.

Eighth prince fell into her trap muddle-headedly. Her previous arrangements were also going well. If he was in sudden danger now, she has a way to deal with it. Hence, even if she was worried, she didn’t panic.

Lin Qing closed his eyes and said, “The current situation of Great Liang is very bad. Ever since the Xiongnu proposed the marriage alliance, I had been feeling uneasy. I am worried…”

“Worried about what,” Zhao Zimu asked. Lin Qing hesitated for a moment before saying, “The Xiongnu has the ambition to seize power of the mainland.”

“Muke ascended the throne, tricked Great Liang, got the princess and the title of khan. In such a short period, he had taken down two cities. This will grow his ambition. Maybe, you are right, but these are not matters that you can take care of. Don’t worry about it.”

Lin Qing didn’t keep anything he did from her. Therefore, she also knew about some major events of the court. She kissed his slender and long fingers and looked straight at him with some obvious desire in her eyes.

Lin Qing turned his head uncomfortably. He knew that she hadn’t forgotten about the thing she had mentioned to him. He took out a small box from his chest and opened it. There was a bunch of golden and delicate things inside.

With joy in her eyes, Zhao Zimu took out the content from the box and put it on him. Then, she held his slender hand carefully and played with it.

Lin Qing quietly watched her curiously fiddling with his hand. His eyes were gently like water and with pampering. He knew that this person has changed ever since she got together with him. Sometimes, some of her unconscious actions would make his heart ache.

She had always hid herself in an ice-cold and hard outer cloak. She looked gentle, but wouldn’t let anyone approach. Now, it was great. She felt satisfied with him accompanying her. He would also not let someone else appear at her side.

Lin Qing had always had a clear understanding of his own mind. He knew that even if this person was by his side, his own gloom wouldn’t change. However, he was willing to give all his gentleness to the person in front of him. He knew that in some respects they were actually the same.

He gently touched her head and met her gaze when she raised her head. It seemed that she was a bit dissatisfied with his behavior. She frowned but her brows relaxed in the next instant and she smiled indulgently at him.

Sure enough, they were the same. The fingers wearing the delicate armor slowly grasped her hand. He thought, it would be so great if they could stay like this for life.

However, everything was often beyond people’s expectation. What happened next broke their peaceful and beautiful life and involved them in the boundless war.

A few days later, after the border sent the emergency report and after the Xiongnu defeated two cities consequently, they invaded another two cities within days. They sent troops to those cities with unknown intentions!

Although, it was said that the intentions were unknown, but it was already very obvious. If it wasn’t because they wanted to use these places as a base to attack every place of Great Liang and seize the power of the mainland, then, it was to make those two cities forever the Xiongnu’s and become a lodge for the people of the grassland to herd their horses.

The situation was an emergency. General Pingxi had asked the court to increase the army to resist the attack of the Xiongnu. Because if the Xiongnu truly had a rebellious mind, they only needed to gain two more cities and their blade can then threaten the capital! By then, Great Liang will be hollowed from the inside. It wasn’t impossible for the Xiongnu to attack Liang capital!

When emperor Jinghui heard this news, he fainted because he got too stirred up. The officials were shocked. Wasn’t this adding oil to fire? At this juncture, emperor Jinghui couldn’t make any more mistakes.

After getting this news, Situ Yaohua and prime minister Lin were the first ones to rush to emperor Jinghui’s bedside. No one knew what they had said to emperor Jinghui. The next day, emperor Jinghui issued a decree that surprised everyone, but that let everyone clap in secret.

Emperor Jinghui ordered Lin Qing to join Situ Yuanxiao and the son of general Pingxi, Chen Jing, as a supervisor to go to the two cities and resist the Xiongnu, and to depart to the north with the hundred thousand soldiers that had been gathered.

Eunuchs were slaves of the emperor. Also, the emperors of Great Liang always had the habit of sending eunuchs to supervise the army because they couldn’t trust anyone. Military power was a thing that could easily provoke the emperor’s sensitive nerves. Therefore, they could only rest assured by sending their most trusted chamberlains.

  • In ancient china, all chamberlains were eunuchs.

Because these people didn’t have descendants and couldn’t threaten their (emperors) positions. Furthermore, these chamberlains could only live in honor by relying on them (emperors). Hence, they could trust these people.

Therefore, the officials weren’t surprised when they heard this news. Moreover, it was the best if they could make use of this opportunity to get rid of the thorn in their eyes.

  2. Heh. I remember there’s a certain era where Eunuchs were a lot powerful that they could control both the royal family and court. Of course, this didn’t end well but which era does?
