If you think the schemings in Chu Wang Fei are amazing, then you don’t know what amazing is.

I thought that my most liked Chinese book will be Chu Wang Fei, but I was so so wrong. This book is truly amazing. Wow. For those who can’t read Chinese like me you can listen to the audiobook. The audiobook is finished. Took me a week. It’s also currently being translated by Solstar 24

Summary

Li Wei Yang is the third daughter of the prime minister from the seventh concubine. She was born on Februari which was considered to be unlucky, so she was sent away to a village where they treated her like a slave.

In the first life she went back to the city on orders of the first wife and married Tuo Ba Zhen, the third prince of Dali. After he ascended the throne with her help, he made her the empress. But after a while he married her sister, the most beautiful woman of Dali  Li Zhang Le. He disposed her, broke her legs and made Zhang Le empress. She was sent to the cold palace and lived there for twelve years, until a poisonous wine was sent to her.

She woke up being her thirteen self again and swore revenge. She took revenge on everyone for what they did in the past life.  Her fate changed. For revenge she helped Tuo Ba Yu, the seventh prince. She also saved Li Ming De who had died in the previous life from drowning. Li Ming De was the adopted son of her third aunt. In the first half of the book Li Ming De didn’t have much power to help her. She fought her battles almost alone.

The second half of the book began when she finished her revenge on Tuo Ba Zhen, but a new revenge emerged on a more powerful person, empress Pei of Yue Shi. She went to Yue Shi to take revenge on her for killing her grandmother and mother and for making her little brother silly. There she met Li Ming De again, now Yuen Lie, a king. He now has the power to help her and they worked together to bring empress Pei down.

Characters

Li Wei Yang/Guo Jia: the third daughter of prime minister Li Xue Ran. In the previous life, her mother already died and she was gullible. In this life she is full of revenge. I advice you to never ever ever ever become her enemy. You’ll die in the most unimaginable and painful way. Her speciality is guessing people’s heart. So, she knows what your biggest fear is and what the most painful death or even living for you is. STAY FAR AWAY FROM HER!!!

Empress Pei/ Pei Huai Zhen: the empress of Yue Shi. She appeared in second half of the book. She is the most interesting character to me. Like Wei Yang her speciality is also guessing people’s heart. Not very much is revealed about her beside that she is very unfeeling, calculating and heartless.

Li Ming De/Yuen Lie: in the first life he died early. In this life, he was saved by Wei Yang  when the maids wanted to murder him on orders of the first wife of Li Xue Ran. Since then, he swore to protect Wei Yang at all cost. Unfortunately in the first half, he was a powerless young man. He has a special identity.

Tuo Ba Zhen: the third prince of Dali. The unfavorite son of the emperor. His mother was murdered by his adopted mother, but he pretended as if nothing happened in order to gain support from his adopted mother’s family. He is a pro at hiding his feelings and can get rid of anyone who stand in his path to the throne. In the previous life, he got the throne. In this life his ending is really bad. I almost pitied him. In this life he fell for Wei Yang. He said that next to the throne, Wei Yang is the thing that he wanted the most in this life. Guy, you already lost your chance.

Tuo Ba Yu: seventh prince of Dali. Considered the most favorite prince. He is also the richest thanks to his mother’s family. He fell for Wei Yang when she proposed an alliance between them. When he thought that the throne was just one step away, a twist is revealed.

Guo family: Guo family adopted Wei Yang as their youngest child. Mistress Guo lost her daughter and thought that Wei Yang was her daughter. She was ill. In order to help her, her husband made Wei Yang his daughter Guo Jia. He and his sons know the truth. His sons are very protective of their little sister. They are the comedy of the book.

Yuen Jing Feng: the emperor of Yue Shi. He is the most cruel emperor in history. He has many new ways to kill people. His greatest enemy is his wife, empress Pei.

Yuen Ying: one of the sons of Yuen Jing Feng. Prince of Yue Shi. He is in love with Wei Yang. He wants to get her by all means and also wants to get the throne. He has great patience and will patiently plan his schemes and wait for you to jump into them.

Ying Chu: he is always wearing a mask on one side of his face. He was a servant of Pei family. He is in love with empress Pei and willingly became an eunuch to stay by her side. He does all the dirty works for her. He knows medicine and poisons and he also has an ‘immortal’ body. He can also see in the future. Only Wei Yang’s future is a blur since Wei Yang changed her fate.

There are many more interesting characters since this is a two part book.

Review

This book has two names: 锦绣未央  (The Princess Wei Yang) and 庶女有毒 (The Concubine’s Daughter is Poisonous).

I like the second title better, it matches Wei Yang. She really is poisonous.

This is a really amazing book. I liked the second part better than the first part. Some say that this is like Chu Wang Fei and Mei Gong Qing but I beg to differ. Chu Wang Fei is a time travel and the schemes in Chu Wang Fei compared to this book is like child’s play.  Although, the beginning of this book and Mei Gong Qing does have some similarities but the main lead in Mei Gong Qing focus more on how to live a better life. She doesn’t want revenge. Wei Yang’s goal in life is only revenge. From the three books, I like this one the most. The author is really a genius for thinking of so many ways to take revenge. The book is really long but it didn’t feel that long. You will be sucked in this book. A must read for Chu Wang Fei’s lovers. Rating: 5/5

But for those who doesn’t like cruelty, this book isn’t for you. Wei Yang’s ways of revenge are things you will never imagine that can be done.

I may have spelled the names wrong cause I only listened to them. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Stop here if you don’t want more spoilers

Tuo Ba Zhen’s ending: he is accused of treason and fleeing for his life. While he was fleeing, Wei Yang found him. She let her high skilled guards cut his legs, the nerves of his arms and tongue, making him someone useless. She bought a mansion special for him with a view to the palace, so he can look everyday at the thing he wanted the most but could never have anymore. She also promised that she will let him live a long long life, so he can suffer in misery for being someone useless while even needing a person to feed him. Living will be worse than death.

  1. I’m currently listening to the audio book, I’m actually so glad Duo Ba Zhen suffered the cruel fate this lifetime, he deserves it considering the suffering he made the MC go through.

  2. Thank you!!!! I’ve been google translating this novel T_T but now someone picked it up and is translating!!! Thanks for linking the site ^-^ Another novel for me to enjoy~

    1. How just watch the drama, but I heard the novel is different. I read the resume of the novel aand would love to read or listen to it in english ince i dont know the language…where do i find the translation

  3. Who’s the main guy, if there is one?

Seems like an interesting story! I love revenge dramas, especially if it’s being led by a fierce and strong female. Lol.

  4. While I like the idea of second chance, but after read about her ex husband’s fate, I feel she’s too cruel with her way. Yes he was horrible in the past life. But the present life is completely different now (he’s in love with her now?). What’s the point to make him suffering when the person didn’t know what exactly his faults to be treated that way. I will feel better to have exacted revenge to those who clearly know their faults, make them regret forever. But if the man also made a grave mistake this time then her actions is justified somehow.
Sorry for the long post, and thank you for the post, going to go and stalk her blog xD

    1. I agree. I read in the first chapter about her cruel fate…but one chapter isn’t making me to hate someone this deep that I would gleam from reading how he suffers by the hand of the person he likes (in the 2nd lifetime he didn’t know what cruel things he has done to her).

But if we get more elaborate informations on what an asshole he in the 2nd life is, it’s much easier to wish that the MC will make him suffer greatly. Or she will tell him why she does this to him (like leaning closer to him and whispering in a soft and calm voice revealing her 1st lifetime and his cruel methods. At the end she will look at him with a freezing gaze and smile shallowly before leaving…dude that would be awesome XD)

    1. I also have the same concern, after reading this book review. It seems to have a very complicated and well-thought out plot. It would be a pity if the drama would be a letdown…

I have seen two of Tang Yan’s dramas (“Perfect Couple” and “Silent Separation”), and because of these dramas, I can’t imagine her being able to portray a cold cruel woman.. Maybe anyone has any idea of any drama/movie she portrayed quite close to the Li Wei Yang character?

    2. No, she doesn’t suit Wei Yang. All her other role were that of a sweet girl. Wei Yang is for somoene like Ha Ji Won, Betty Sun, Li Bing Bing.
When I was listening to this the one person who came into my mind for empress Bei is the 40 year old Brigitte Lin. Its a pity she retired. If she was younger and still acting that role is made for her.

  5. Thankies for this book review!

I have seen the news about Tang Yan portraying as Li Wei Yang. I love Tang Yan (especially in “Perfect Couple” and “Silent Separation”) but I’m concerned if she can portray Li Wei Yang’s cold, calculating, and cruel for revenge character…

I’ll wait for the translation to have more chapters completed before diving in. Heehee~ Thankies for sharing the link!

  6. My kind of book…and I’m crushed Tan Yan was cast but who knows…maybe this will be her role to break out of her typecast.

Hell if I can accept the casting of Once Promised this should be easier

  7. So exciting! Even though I personally prefer more light-hearted stories, what I’ve read in this book so far has been really gripping.

    Definitely recommended!

  8. Thanks for the summary. Earlier when the book has yet been translated, I used bing translate. Couldn’t understand and gave up. Now that someone has taken up the project, my interest has picked up again.

    1. try google translator, i used bing but can’t quite grasped the story. but google translate is a bit better. currently reading using google translate since i can’t read and understand Chinese.

  9. I started reading the translation and love it. Now only anxiously awaiting more installments, I wish I could read or understand Chinese.

  10. Haven’t read this book, but from what you wrote, it seems to have some similarities with 盛世王妃 by 千山茶客. Have you read it? Definitely check it out if you haven’t 🙂 By far my ultimate favorite ancient chinese novel. Same rebirth+revenge theme. It’s just so fun and squeal-worthy because the main girl learned loads of secrets from her past life so she uses that to her advantage in this life. And I also love it because the girl is the most beautiful woman in the kingdom ;P And the main guy is just awesome.

    1. I havent read that one yet. I mostly only listen to chinese book. I searched but there isnt an audio book. Im currently listening to 簪中录. Really got me hooked. Its more about solving the cases than romance. The romance is really slow. But the cases are amazing. Theres always a twist

  11. You know… Why do a lot of these male leads act a lot like that statement in the movie, “French Kiss.” Meg Ryan’s character goes, “the trick to French waiters is that if you let them treat you like shit they hate you. Treat ‘them’ like shit, they love you.

  12. i’m glad she doesn’t go back w the old guy. Lol am i mean thinking it’s not that cruel? It’s wrong as a human being but right for her as she was betrayed and had to suffer the same way in the past. nooo, the drama is so different?! this novel plot seems more interesting and unique compared to normal love triangles 🙁

  13. I finished listening ti The audiobook, what happened.WD in the end? I M confused…empress bei, yue shi kings and the eunuchs ending are somehow rushed…please help me out.

    1. Wei yang and li ming de married. They have two children together. Empress bei and the emperor died together in the fire. The next emperor was the cousin of guo family yuen ying. But he still wanted wei yang so li ming de poisoned him. He was only emperor for half a year. Then another prince forgot his name got to the throne who is kindhearted and li ming de continued to be an idle prince. The eunuch ying chu was killed by the girl in love with guo family fifth son (sorry also forgot her name. I think she is from wang family) She found out that ying chu’s weakness is the part of his face with the mask.
The big secret is that the crown prince turned out to be the son of the emperor and his beloved princess zi xia. That was the revenge of empress bei. She took crown as her son so the emperor will treat the crown prince badly.

    2. I also felt that the ending was a bit rushed. The author didnt tell what happened to tuo ba yu and his wife after she was taken away by ying chu. The ending of empress bei was anticlimatic but it suited her. She got to die with the only person she loves in the world. Her last words about the crown prince can be a lie but it also can be the truth. I can totally see her being so twisted as to raise her rival child as revenge.

  14. Please recommend me something similar to this book TT__TT I just freakin’ love Wei Yang’s character… it so hard to have a female lead as smart and as badass as she is… most of female leads that I had read were either naive, dependant on male lead, or just lucky for most of the time…

    1. there arent many full translated books in english of this genre cause they are usually a few hundreds chapters. there are some who has a few chapters translated. Have you tried Chu wangfei and DWGMSFF yet? There’s also this one http://www.novelupdates.com/series/the-cry-of-the-phoenix-which-reached-the-ninth-heaven/
If you understand chinese try one of my all time favorite https://rosyfantasy.net/2016/11/15/%e9%87%8d%e7%94%9f%e4%b9%8b%e5%b0%86%e9%97%a8%e6%af%92%e5%90%8e-the-rebirthed-poisonous-empress-from-the-generals-family/
盛世嫡妃 is also a good one. Currently i’m reading 嫡女難求. I love this is so much, but it’s 521 chapters, so i doubt anyone will translate it. I’m currently at chapter 413. This is the one which resembles princess Wei Young the most although less bloody.

  15. Wow, I didn’t realise there was an audiobook! Thanks for pointing it out ^^ Reading chinese has always been a pain for me. For some reason I’m ok with speaking and listening but reading chinese just gives me a headache. Strangely enough, I love reading in english! But the novel translation is incomplete 🙁 Anyway, just want to mention my thanks for this helpful review. 🙂

  16. Both CWF and MGQ doesn’t even match to this. CWF isn’t even rebirth. MGQ is too lenient. Like you said, doesn’t really focus much on revenge. PWY is ruthless and brutal. If to think of a novel comparable to it, I’d say Rebirth of Malicious Empress is closer — both hinging on rebirth and revenge. Though I’d like to say PWY is more scheming, considering PWY’s conditions aren’t very favourable at all! At least, for the latter, she had a powerful background. XDD

  17. Yess i love this book so much …. thats why i start reading similar book like chu wang fei …. wei young really talent woman who know what she really want in her life …. and iam once more agree with you book part 2 more loveable …. but to bad the translation not finish yet … but greatfull the audiobook is finish ….

  18. Hi there..

Can anyone tell me where can I find a completed English translation of this book.
I’m really curious and kind find one online..

  19. Hi. Can i ask if Wei Yang faces many difficulties after her rebirth? That will stress me out.

Or does she easily plot against her enemies and always have the upper hand? I’m in the mood to read this kind of story. Should I read PWY?

  20. Hi!!!
I’m currently reading the book translation (in this page for those who wanted to read https://www.novelupdates.com/series/the-princess-wei-yang/) but sometimes it pass a lot of time between uploads and I want to know if there’s a link or page when I can find all the story complete… don’t get me wrong, I’m thankful to find the translation (and I’m pretty sure that translate a novel from Chinese it’s complicated) but I want to read them all the novel without pauses!

  21. Your detailed introduction was very good but unintentionally you gave a spoiler! You said that Emperor Yuen Lie helped her to take revenge on Empress Pie but then you wrote Ming De/ Yuen Lie telling us his real identity…. I was not surprised by the way , when San Furen died he started keeping secrets from Wei Yang and many servants started to stay with him I became suspicious and came to the conclusion that he is a prince.

    1. I don’t remember exactly anymore what had happened to him. He married someone he doesn’t love but who could help him in getting the throne. His obsession with Weiyang never faded away. In the end, he didn’t get the throne

  22. Thank you for this! when you say, “In the previous life…” are you talking about reincarnation or different identities that they assume in this one lifetime? The show on Netflix doesn’t touch on reincarnation. Also, are there any stories like this available in English subs on Netflix, Prime video, etc that we can access in the US?

    1. The show is supposed to be based on the book. However, it is completely different. Only the names are the same. In the book Tuoba Zhen is not the male lead. My review is based on the book. I haven’t watched the drama because don’t think Tiffany can play the cunning Weiyang well and they changed the story completely.
