Summary
This story is about a daughter (Nie Dongye) of a wealthy renowned family in the world of martial arts. Her mother had passed away when she was young and she hated her father for being heartless and for taking another wife shortly after her mother had died. She also resented her siblings from the same mother who sided with the stepmother. Her stepmother is the cousin of her father who was engaged to him, but then fell in love with Nie Dongye’s mother. They got married and lived happily for a few years. However, her mother became sick and her beauty withered away. The father abandoned her mother in a courtyard of the residence and went into the arms of his cousin. They also have a child together. He also got his cousin to raise all his other children. Only Nie Dongye stayed with her mother.
When the story began, an adopted brother of the male lead accidentally killed a little white snake of Nie Dongye. The brother promised to find another little white snake for her. Eight years had passed when he let the male lead go deliver the little white snake for Nie Dongye.
Nie Dongye’s father happened to want to arrange a marriage for her, so, she escaped from home. When the male lead found her, she played tricks on him and let him accompany her to her maternal grandfather. During the journey, she felt that he may be a good husband and also forced him to marry with the help of her grandfather. However, what the grandfather didn’t know was that he is one of the feared devils of the jianghu. His specialty is digging out people’s heart. Unknown to others, he only killed evil people, but his name already got tarnished in the jianghu and he isn’t someone who would explain himself. His martial arts is very high-skilled, so, no one could’ve forced him to do things he doesn’t want to do. He married her willingly.
When the Nie Dongye got to know his identity, she didn’t care and tried to get him to like her. He also understood her better than everyone and was very considerate towards her. He understands her pain of loving and hating her family because of his past. He said that those who had suffered will only be able to fully understands one’s pain. One the wedding day, he promised Nie Dongye that no matter what, he wouldn’t kill her family.
During an assassination attempt on her family, he saved her family and exposed his identity. Because he was so feared and regarded as evil, her family turned on him, to not get implicated. They called the people from the jianghu to get rid of him. During the battle, he kept his promise and didn’t lay a finger on her family. Nie Dongye at that time, yelled at him to forget his promise to her and to just dug their hearts out because they are people without hearts. He still kept his promise. Instead, his arm got cut off and he was pushed so much that he had to jump from a cliff.
Ever since then, Nie Dongye pretended to be crazy because she was pregnant and her family planned to let her abort the baby and marry her off to a family friend. By pretending to be crazy, no one was able to get close to her without being hurt.
Three years later, one of the other feared devils who was regarded as a holy doctor visited her in the name of finding a cure for her. In fact, he was trying to see what had happened to his brother. Then, he saw a child that looked exactly the same as his brother. That night, he took Nie Dongye out of Nie residence to the place where the devils resided. The male lead turned out to be still alive but lost an arm. He forgave her family but she couldn’t. They had three more children together and in the end, she was forced by him to go save her family once again when they were in trouble. He knew her very well and knew that although on the surface, she didn’t care but she did care about her family.
After that, they went away and the place of the devils of the jianghu were taken by their children and the children of the other devils.
Review
I feel like this story was a bit too short for my liking. I still don’t get how the male lead would marry just like that. At the time of the marriage, he at most liked her and didn’t love her yet and only sympathized with her. It was after the marriage that he slowly turned the liking to loving. I think the title was based on the years that they were separated from each other. However, as a reader I didn’t feel that agony because it was just a chapter or two that they were separated. In short, this book was too short and therefore lacked depth. I rate this book 2/5.
